ASEAN Intellectual Property Offices Symposium 2017

The ASEAN region as a whole is the world’s third largest importer of Japanese products, being an important business market for Japan. Also, according to a recent survey, the region’s importance is expected to further increase as an investment destination, since five ASEAN countries are among the top ten countries where Japanese companies plan to expand their businesses over the next three years. Based on these anticipated investment expansions in this growing regional market, Japanese industry is expressing a need for systems to be developed, which will create the appropriate landscape needed for IP business in the ASEAN Region to grow.

The ASEAN Region has exerted organizational efforts to strengthen the protection of IP in the region by initiating major initiatives such as the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC), which was formed in 2015 to promote the region’s economic development through attracting investment and facilitating trade; and the ASEAN IP Rights Action Plan for 2016–2025, the community’s ten-year road map for which the final edition was announced in February 2017.

In line with the above needs and circumstances, the JPO is organizing a symposium based on the theme “The Current State and Future Development of Business Environment for IP Activities in the ASEAN”, taking advantage of the ASEAN/Japan Heads of IP Offices Meeting that will be held during the same timeframe in Japan.

During the symposium representatives from Japanese industry will make presentations on their expectations and requests for improving the business landscape for IP activities in the ASEAN, and representatives from the ASEAN will share details about the 2016–25 IP Rights Action Plan and recent developments on the current state IP systems in the individual ASEAN countries. In addition, a panel discussion will be held with the ASEAN IP heads to explore their expectations and outlooks for the IP systems in the Region. This symposium is an excellent opportunity to share the latest information on region’s fast-changing IP landscape and hear an overview of the entire ASEAN Region’s future direction.

We most heartily encourage you to attend this informative and valuable seminar.
